Karaikal Port Promoter and Director, Mr. G. R. K. Reddy was honoured with the Corporate Social Responsibility Award at South East India Cargo & Logistics Award 2010, in Chennai on July 31st, 2010. The award was in recognition of the many CSR initiatives that have been undertaken MARG Ltd. under his guidance. MARG Ltd. is the parent company of Karaikal Port and many of these CSR programs have been initiated for the development of the region around Karaikal.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. G. R. K. Reddy said, “MARG has always focused on region development through infrastructure projects. It is our belief that the success of a project can only be determined by the progress of the neighbourhood rural masses. An award for Corporate Social Responsibility further strengthens this belief and is indeed an honour. MARG Karaikal Port has closed the first quarter of FY2010 after handling over 1.2 million tonnes of cargo. Over 25 cargo vessels called at the Port during this period bringing various Cargoes such as Steam Coal, Pet Coke, Fertiliser and Copra cake. The month of June saw the heaviest traffic with 12 cargo vessels carrying over 0.64 million tonnes of cargo. The port saw 4 new clients, namely SPBL, Dalmia Cements, Adani Enterprises & Coromandel International. The period also saw the Port receiving its largest consignment till date – MV Vijaynagar carrying 68000 MT of coal for JSW. 5 Gearless Panamax vessels called during this quarter signalling the gradual shift towards the larger vessels, a trend that is particularly encouraging for Karaikal Port. Another encouraging point was that Karaikal Port catered to various industries such as Cement, Paper, Steel, Aluminium, Edible Oil and Fertiliser. These results are in line with Karaikal Port’s vision of being a multi-commodity terminal catering to a diverse hinterland.

Karaikal Port used this opportunity to felicitate its esteemed customers who have been its partners in progress over the course of development and subsequent commercialization of the port. The event was attended by representatives of Karaikal Port’s main customers and business partners and was presided over by Mr. G R K Reddy, CMD of MARG Group. The event was a platform to promote increased interaction and better communication between Karaikal Port and its customers, in keeping with the port’s vision of being a truly customer centric organization.

Marg Ltd. CMD, Mr. GRK Reddy and Karaikal Port ED, Mr. MLN Acharyulu, together launched ‘KARAIKAL BEACON’ during a customer appreciation meet organised by Karaikal Port Pvt. Ltd. The quarterly newsletter will serve as a communication channel between the Port and all those associated with it. The periodic journal will contain latest updates in the project & infrastructure field as well as a roundup of the traffic, news and events at the port during the period. It will also feature a section dedicated to the customers where they can share their experiences at Karaikal Port. The newsletter will be available for download at Karaikal Port website.

MV Belstar earned the distinction of being the first fertilizer vessel to berth at Karaikal Port. The Vessel arrived at 1845 hrs on the 30th of May, 2010 carrying 18234 MT of MOP for Coromandel International Ltd. The Cargo was discharged using vessel cranes into hoppers and intercarted to covered storage for bagging. The vessel completed discharging the following day and sailed out.

MARG Karaikal Port received Rs. 700 million from India Infrastructure Fund (IIF) of IDFC on March 31, 2010. This payment comes as the first installment of a total of Rs. 1500 million that the IDFC is investing in the phase 2 development of the Port as per Share Holder's Agreement/Share Subscribers' Agreement dated March 01, 2010.

Karaikal Port Crowned for Recreating the Illustrious Trade Age of the Chola Dynasty
Then, Karaikal was a bustling coastal province doing brisk foreign trade with South Eastern countries under the rule of the Cholas. Today, MARG has brought back its glory.
The Port has been bestowed with the honour “Outstanding Achievement Award” for Port Development & Port Management at the SHIPPING, MARINE & PORTS 2010 leadership & excellence awards, supported by the CHEMTECH foundation. The award was received from His Excellency Sri Kateekal Shankarnarayanan, Governor of Maharashtra by Mr. M L N Acharyulu, Executive Director, MARG Karaikal Port at a glittering ceremony in Mumbai attended by eminent persons of the Marine Industry from both Government and Private Companies on the evening of March 4, 2010.
An even greater achievement is earning this special recognition within a span of just 12 months. This goes to prove that the Port will serve as a pillar to enhance trade in the South Eastern Coast of India.
In just 9 months the Port has crossed 1 million MT cargo mark. The key achievements include:
- Completing the Phase 1 two months ahead of schedule
- Railway sidings at Port within 6 months of operations
- Handling over 150 vessels so far.

M V ILC Friendship arrived at Karaikal Port carrying Copra cakes for South India Edible Ltd. This is the first time that the port has received Agro Products. The port had obtained the necessary PQ clearance for the vessel before arrival. The vessel discharged 7000 Mt of copra cake in bags which will be stored in the port’s warehouses until evacuation.

BHEL Cargo sets sail from Karaikal Port

Karaikal Port has earned the coveted distinction of being the first private port to cater to power equipment major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd's (BHEL) prestigious export project cargo. M. V. Cape Hobart loaded 236 packages of various size and dimensions totalling 7745 CBM and 3452 MT and set sail for New Caledonia, a French colony near Australia.
The cargo consists of boiler components for two 135-MW Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion (CFBC) boilers belonging to Koniambo Nickel. The vessel was flagged off in the presence of senior BHEL, Koniambo and KPPL officials.

Karaikal Port established its railway connectivity by flagging off its first rail cargo. The first cargo transported by rail belongs to Madras Cements Ltd. and is destined towards Ichengadu in Ariyalur where their cement factory is located. The cargo transported was pet coke and 1 rake was loaded at the newly constructed railway sidings at Karaikal Port.
The flagging off was done by Mr. V. Vaithilingam, Puducherry Chief Minister, at a special ceremony to mark the occasion. Also present were Mr. V. Narayanasamy (Union Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs, and Culture), Mr. Iqbal Singh (Lieutenant Governor, Puducherry), Mr. E. Valsaraj (Minister of Home and Ports, Puducherry), Mr. A. M. H. Nazeem (Leader of Opposition, Puducherry), and Mr. G. R. K. Reddy (CMD, Marg Group).

M. V. Cape Hobart arrived at Karaikal Port to load project cargo for BHEL. The 17546 Dwt vessel berthed at 1100 hrs and began loading 2 hrs later. The vessel belongs to BEN lines and will head to New Caledonia, a French colony near Australia. 234 packages of various size and dimensions totalling 7745 CBM and 3452 MT will be loaded onto the vessel over the next few days. The vessel is expected to complete loading on 29th January and will be flagged off in the presence of senior BHEL and KPPL officials.

Railway sidings load testing successfully done

With the completion of the bridge over River Vettar, railway connectivity has now reached Karaikal port. The port is located at a distance of 1 km from Nagore where the closest railhead exists, but was separated by the river Vettar. The completion of the railway bridge over this river has paved the way for the railway to enter Karaikal Port. The connecting line was load-tested by Southern railways and declared fit for use.
The Port sidings have been ready since November 2009 and with the connectivity to Nagore finally being established, cargo movement by rail is soon set to begin.

The first batch of export project cargo belonging to equipment major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) arrived at Karaikal Port. The cargo consists of boiler components for two 135-MW Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion (CFBC) boilers destined to New Caledonia-based firm Koniambo Nickel. BHEL will despatch 14,000 tonnes of components for each of the two boilers to New Caledonia, a French colony near Australia, through Karaikal Port. Karaikal Port has earmarked a designated area for this project cargo which will be maintained clean and dust-free as per BHEL specifications

In a bid to expand the support infrastructure, Karaikal Port added 2 more closed warehouses to its capacity. The warehouses (84mX24m) are of 2016 m2 area each. Total warehousing capacity at Karaikal port is now over 10000m2. An additional 15000 m2 is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by January 2010. The warehouses will be used for storing Madras Cements export cargo (cement in bags).

Karaikal Port received its second Panamax vessel M. V. Ecoan barely 3 weeks after the first panamax vessel called at the port. M. V. Econ brought 60000MT of pet coke and completed discharge of its cargo in less than 3 days. The vessel is 225 m long and 32.28 m wide and has a registered Dwt of 75000MT. Like the last Panamax, the cargo of this vessel belongs to Madras Cements Ltd.

Karaikal Port edged out Chennai and Tuticorin ports to bag power equipment major Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd's (BHEL) prestigious export project cargo. BHEL Tiruchirappalli unit will start exporting its boilers through the Greenfield private port at Karaikal
Project cargo, classified as ‘clean cargo’, requires high hygiene conditions for storage and handling. Karaikal port has especially earmarked a contamination free area for handling of project cargo. BHEL officials, satisfied with the sanitary conditions at Karaikal Port and its capabilities to handle the sensitive cargo, awarded the contract of storing and exporting their cargo through the port.
While Karaikal Port has been regularly handling project cargo for companies such as NOCL and HOEC, this contract is particularly encouraging because this is the first time that BHEL, a government agency, has selected a private port for cargo export. Karaikal Port met all the qualifying standards set by BHEL in addition to offering an economically viable proposal.

Karaikal Port has added another feather to its cap by berthing its first gearless Panamax vessel. Germany registered M. V. Merian has a GRT of 40562 MT and is carrying 56863 MT of pet coke belonging to Madras Cements Ltd. The 225 meter long vessel berthed safely at 0740 hrs on 19th November, 2009, alongside Berth no. 1.
Karaikal Port is now looking to berth more number of gearless Panamax vessels providing maximum benefits to the hinterland customers in terms of cost and time savings by allowing import of cargo in larger parcel sizes.

Nord Maru arrived at Berth no. 2 at 1625 hrs on 4th October, 2009, carrying 45600 MT of raw sugar for T A Sugars Ltd. The cargo will be discharged through 4 hoppers and bagged at site. The warehouses at Karaikal Port provide for safe keeping of the cargo till it is dispatched to the client’s site.

The permissible draft at Karaikal Port is now at 12.5 metres and in addition to fully loaded Super Handymax vessels, the port can now receive Panamax vessels. The first Panamax vessel is expected to call at the port next month.

Work is currently on full swing at the satellite railway siding site at Nagore railway station. The satellite sidings are located at a distance of 3.6 Km from Karaikal Port. With the commissioning of the satellite sidings, Karaikal Port will be equipped to evacuate cargo by rail in October, 2009. These sidings are in addition to the railways sidings within the port premises which are expected to begin operations by January 2010.

Coal & Oil Company placed its second coal vessel at Karaikal Port taking advantage of the 12.0 metre acceptable draft. M. V. Rainbow berthed at the port on September 11th, 2009 carrying 48622 MT of thermal coal. Cargo was discharge in 2 days and the vessel sailed out on September 14th, 2009.

Karaikal port received its first coal vessel on August 2nd, 2009. M. V. Valarie arrived at the port at 6:45 am carrying 50119 MT of coal from Indonesia for Bhatia Coal Traders. The vessel had to be lightered to the acceptable draft of 11 metres before it could berth. The cargo was discharged in 2 days at an average rate of over 20000 MT/day. The vessel completed discharge and sailed out on August 4th, 2009.

M. V. Da Fu arrived at Karaikal Port today signalling the beginning of commercial operations at the port. Da Fu arrived on 28th May and departed on June 1st 2009 after offloading 15757 CBM of project cargo. The cargo consignment from Germany is for Nagarjuna Oil Corporation. The project cargo consists of 17 pieces of multiple dimensions, with the heaviest piece weighing 245 tonnes. The cargo would be offloaded on to the port and later reloaded on the barges to be transported to Nagarjuna Oil Corporation project site near Cuddalore.

A project cargo specialist vessel, MV Beluga Fan Fare, carrying two Mobile Harbour Cranes, (total 10219 CBM of cargo) arrived at Karaikal port earning the distinction of being the first vessel at the port. The cranes, manufactured by Liebherr, Germany, were loaded at Port of Rostok, Germany and offloaded for private use of the port. The vessel arrived on April 15th, 2009 and departed on April 17th, 2009. The vessel was received with huge fanfare as the event also marked the formal inauguration of the port.
